Chin Contouring
Chin Contouring is a surgical procedure designed to reshape the chin to better harmonize with the patient’s facial features and masculinization goals. It can enhance a small or receded chin, sharpen the jaw-neck angle, and improve the overall neckline and lower-face definition. The procedure may also be combined with chin liposuction for enhanced contour.
Performed by Dr. Adibfar at Elements Toronto, the procedure is fully customized based on the patient’s facial proportions, bone structure, skin quality, dental alignment, and aesthetic goals. A review of dental and sinus history is part of the consultation process.
Depending on the patient’s needs, chin contouring may involve bone reduction or augmentation with a chin implant to improve projection and facial balance.
Surgical Approaches for Chin Implants
When chin augmentation is performed with an implant, two approaches may be used:
Submental (Under the Chin)
A small incision is made within the natural crease beneath the chin. The implant is placed under direct visualization and the incision is closed with sutures.
- Advantage: Excellent visibility and precise placement, Lower risk of contamination
- Consideration: Small, well-concealed scar
Intraoral (Inside the Mouth)
A small incision is made inside the lower lip. The implant is placed over the chin bone (mandible) and the incision is closed with dissolvable sutures.
- Advantage: No visible external scar
- Consideration: Slightly higher risk of bacterial contamination
Recovery Timeline
Recovery varies from patient to patient, but the following timeline provides a general guideline:
- First 48–72 hours: Swelling and discomfort in the chin and lower jaw area are expected. Head elevation and a soft diet are recommended.
- Week 1: Bruising and swelling begin to subside. Oral hygiene is maintained with gentle rinsing as directed. Strenuous activity should be avoided.
- Weeks 1–2: Most patients return to normal activities within 1–2 weeks. Swelling continues to improve and the new chin shape becomes more visible.
- Weeks 3–6: Swelling resolves further, allowing the final chin contour to emerge. Exercise may be gradually reintroduced once cleared by Dr. Adibfar.
- 4–6 months: The results are fully apparent. The outcome of Chin Contouring is permanent.
Dr. Adibfar will provide detailed post-operative instructions and monitor your healing closely throughout your recovery to ensure the best possible outcome.
